Talking about finishing: scripts that stay kind

Talking about an ending is easier when it leaves room for different needs. Suggested wording is a starting point, not a rule a partner must accept.

Before: remove the target

Try “I would like time together without needing a particular finish. How does that sound?” Ask in a setting where declining is easy. Do not turn the conversation into a surprise negotiation during unwanted activity.

During: ask about the present

“Would you like to keep going, change something or stop?” is more open than “Are you nearly there?” Accept the answer without bargaining. Silence, hesitation or apparent arousal should not replace agreement.

After: ask about preferences

Later, ask what felt comfortable and what should change. Avoid demanding reassurance or a rating. If the topic brings persistent distress, consider qualified support; a script cannot resolve every relationship or health concern.

Before you decide

Do these words allow an honest no, or are they asking for reassurance in disguise?
